The Land of Golden Thrones

Photographing the North Rim

3-day, 2-Night Private Workshop on the North Rim
Open to Individuals and Small Groups

About My Private Photography Workshops

I specialize in creating custom workshops for those that are eager to learn more about the art of landscape photography. My private workshops are all about you as I custom tailor the experience to your schedule, your photographic needs, and your skill level. It includes me passing along my photographic knowledge and photographing from what I have discovered to be some of the best locations at the canyon.

What Will We Do On the Workshop?

We will visit and photograph from a variety of scenic locations along the rim of the Grand Canyon. Along the way I will cover the techniques I use to get sharp and well-exposed images, how I manage focus and depth-of-field control, using filters, and planning a photo session to get the most out of your limited time.

In addition to technique, I also share with you my approach to creating a variety of compositions including wide-angle grand scenics, working with foreground anchors, leading lines, s-curves, layered landscapes, and intimate scenes. If the weather permits, we will also photograph the dark night sky above the Grand Canyon. You will be able to take what you learn here with me and apply it to any location or subject.

This workshop begins four hours before sunset and finishes about 90 minutes after sunset. We meet again the following morning approximately an hour before sunrise, and the workshop is completed an hour-and-a-half afterward.

What Viewpoints Will We Photograph From?

The North Rim is about a thousand feet higher in elevation than that South Rim and has seven named viewpoints, two of which are some of the most iconic in the park. Each of these can be a great spot to photograph from, but the challenge is knowing the best locations for the given light and weather conditions. For this reason, I typically wait to select locations until the day of the workshop so that we may adapt to changes in light and weather to put you in the best spots possible. I select locations based on my experiences in photographing the Grand Canyon for 12+ years and having lived at the canyon as an Artist-in-Residence for Grand Canyon National Park.

Night Sky Photography

If weather conditions allow a night photography session, it may be possible to either photograph the stars above the canyon or photograph the canyon under the moonlight, depending on the moon phase. This session is typically limited to 1-hour of shooting beginning 1 hour after sunset. I do not charge an additional fee for the night photography session. I consider it a bonus session if the weather cooperates.

Recommended Gear

What to bring to a workshop will depend on the time of year that you visit the canyon, and what you would like to get out of the workshop experience. There's no need to have "professional" camera gear, in order to make great images. On my website, I have a page titled Grand Canyon Photography Gear Guide with notes regarding how to dress for the different seasons at the Grand Canyon, and what camera equipment I recommend bringing. Please let me know if you have any questions about this information.

The price for a one-day private workshop on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is $1800.00 for one participant.

Friends and Family

Let me know if you’re traveling with family or friends and I can create an experience that is just as fun and informative for them too! One friend or family member may tag along with each paid participant. The friend or family member is welcome and encouraged to bring a camera, but they may not use a tripod.

Lodging, Transportation, and Meals

The workshop fee does not include your lodging, transportation, or meals. Per the Commercial Use Authorization (the permit to conduct workshops) issued to me by the National Park Service, participants are responsible for transporting themselves within the park. This allows you to take all the camera gear you could possibly want, and it also aids in social distancing.

Schedule & Availability

If you're ready to sign-up for a private workshop, please contact me to confirm my availability for your requested date(s) before registering. You can send me a message, or feel free to call or text me at 928-864-6423 to check on your date(s). You can then return to this page and add the workshop to your cart to begin the checkout process.

I want to make your visit to the Grand Canyon a great experience! The Grand Canyon is a place that I genuinely love and respect, and I feel it’s a privilege to share it with my workshop clients.
