My wife, Sally, has been trying to get me to admit I have a problem for many years. As much as it pains me to say this, I have an addiction to camera backpacks. There, I said it, and I mean it, I love camera backpacks. My collection was large enough at one time that I could have stocked a camera store. I've owned countless packs over the years, including those from most major manufacturers. I've learned that there is no such thing as a perfect camera backpack, but the packs we have to choose from today are pretty amazing.
My favorite pack (as of November 2022) is the Action X50, made by Shimoda Designs. The Action X50 features a spacious design that can be made larger or smaller as needed, thanks to a roll-top opening at the top of the pack. For example, in the winter, I may start in the morning with a large puffy jacket on, but as the air temperature warms up, I can shed the jacket and easily stuff it into the top of the pack.
The greatest strength of the Action X50 is the camera, is the camera and lens compartment insert known as a "Core" unit. Shimoda makes a wide range of Core units in varying sizes, allowing you to customize their packs to best fit your camera gear. In addition to the Core unit, the Action X50 also has lots of pockets for storing gloves, a headlamp, a memory card case, snacks, and much more. There's a pocket on each shoulder strap, including one that is perfect for most smartphones. Speaking of the shoulder straps and the rest of the suspension/harness on this pack, it's the most comfortable photography pack I have ever used.
I cloud go on all day talking about the Action X50 and why I think it is such a great pack. If it's too large for your needs, I suggest considering the Action X30. I encourage you to check out the Buy Now link below to learn more about these packs.
