Desert Thunder

Monsoon at the Grand Canyon ~ August 5th to 9th, 2019

This is an opportunity to join Adam in photographing one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as it comes to life in an ever-changing palette of light and color. The summer monsoon can bring thunderstorms with cooling rains and dynamic skies along with the potential to photograph rainbows and lightning at the Grand Canyon!

The size of this workshop is being kept very small to ensure that everyone gets one-on-one instruction, and so that you will have plenty of space to capture the canyon without feeling crowded or like you’re missing out on the best spots. As always, Adam’s goal is to help you realize your creative potential, to have a great experience, and for you to return home with great photos!

The Schedule

Specific details will be provided upon completion of your registration. The itinerary will be set just prior to the beginning of the workshop and will be fluid so that we can adapt to changes in weather conditions, thus allowing us to capture the best moments. Plan on early mornings and late evenings as we will be starting well before sunrise and shooting until after sunset. The schedule will allow for downtime during our mid-day rest periods.

From mid-July through mid-September the Grand Canyon and most of the American Southwest sees a major shift in the weather patterns with the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon. This period typically has afternoon thunderstorms with brief periods of heavy rain, which can be great for photography. The high temperature can be in the 80s (27-32°C), with early morning temperatures occasionally dipping into the 40s (4-9°C).

Travel Information

For this workshop, it is recommended that you fly into and out of Las Vegas McCarran International Airport as it is most centrally located to both the South Rim and North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. It is approximately a 4-hour drive from the airport to our lodge on the South Rim in the town of Tusayan, Arizona. It is a 4.5-hour drive from the North Rim back to the airport.

This workshop includes single-occupancy lodging in comfortable rooms at Red Feather Lodge on the South Rim, and in Frontier Cabins at the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim.

Meals and Transportation

Meals are not included, but the workshop groups often have a great time dining together. Transportation and National Park entrance fees are not provided. We will caravan and/or carpool to our destinations as much as possible. Due to limited parking, you are encouraged to share rides with your fellow workshop participants.

What Makes These Workshops Special?

Adam has spent over 700 days exploring and photographing the Grand Canyon, from the South Rim, the North Rim and below the rim including covering all 277 miles of the Colorado River within the park. In addition to that, he has lived in the park as the Artist-in-Residence for Grand Canyon National Park. During this time he gained invaluable experience photographing the Grand Canyon in all conditions including snow, rain, dust storms, and lightning. The result is that you will not find another photographer that knows the park better or is more passionate about the Grand Canyon. Read the reviews and see what Adam’s fans have to say about his Grand Canyon photo workshops.

“I signed up for my first workshop with Adam with a love of photography, but as a novice of “real” camera equipment and no experience. Somehow I convinced Adam to take me on, and he promised to help me learn to use the gear. His love and knowledge of photography as well as the Grand Canyon are unmatched!”

Holly DeanHolly Dean, Iowa

“Grand Canyon photography workshop was awesome! The insight to the canyon Adam shared was so informative and the instruction concise. So helpful in getting you comfortable with all aspects of shooting landscape photography. Would highly recommend his workshops to anyone working on improving their landscape photography.”
