Behind the Scenes

I look into what it's like being a landscape photographer. I do this for my parents who always say that I don't share enough photos of myself.

Sally and I are hiking the Virgin River Narrows in Zion National Park. This hike has to be one of the best in the American Southwest. You have to walk in the river, and we've had water up to our chests at times, but it's so worth it!

I love camping, but I hate dealing with a tent, especially in the morning when I'm up early and trying to get ready for a sunrise shoot. I do however love the rooftop tent on my 4Runner. I can set this tent up in about a minute and pack it away in about 3 minutes.

One of the hikes we did on our 2017 river trip was to a place known as the "Silver Grotto" in Shinumo Wash. To reach this location, you must swim through not one, but two long pools of water. We float our camera gear in dry bags as we make the swim. The canyon walls are so tall that sunlight rarely makes it to the bottom of the canyon meaning the water is incredibly cold. For this reason, Silver Grotto is also known as "Shiver Grotto."

This is a photo from my 2017 trip through Grand Canyon. Dave Edwards is pointing the way. Dave once said to me "if I get quiet, it means you're doing o.k." At one point I hadn't heard from Dave in at least an hour, so I turned around to chat with him and found him sleeping in the back of the raft. I guess I did ok for that last hour? This the boatman in our 2019 river trip at the scout location for the infamous Lava Falls Rapid. I know I’m smiling, but inside I was scared to death knowing that in a few minutes I’d be on the oars making my first run through the rapid. Photo courtesy of Yaz Loukhal.

My run in Lava Falls Rapid started out ok, but things quickly changed when the river grabbed the boat and spun us 180 degrees and suddenly I was rowing backwards. My attempt to get us spun back around was unsuccesful and we hit the next wave broadside. You can see Art and I doing our best to “high-side” into the wave to keep us from flipping. I guess it worked because we finished the run right side up. Thanks to Joe Bennion for grabbing this shot.
