The January 2021 issue of Arizona Highways magazine is out, and the cover features my photograph Clearing Winter Storm at Hopi Point depicting a winter scene at the Grand Canyon. I made this photograph on New Years Day 2015 as a snowstorm was clearing from the canyon. It was cold enough on this day that the snow fell all the way to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon.
It had been overcast much of the afternoon, but as sunset approached, a break formed in the clouds on the western horizon. Sunlight spilled through the gap and cast a warm glow upon the canyon's upper reaches as clouds continued to hang in the canyon, giving a dreamy quality to the scene.
