The Architecture and Landscape of Northern New Mexico

June 11th & 12th, 2010
Tuition $275/person (registration deadline May 21st, 2010)
Physical Activity Rating: Easy*

Want to visit and photograph a foreign land without ever leaving the country?  The join me, Adam Schallau, for a day photographing the magnificent sights of the old Spanish missions of the High Road between Taos and Santa Fe while taking in the refreshing high-desert air, and the unbelievable light of northern New Mexico. In addition to the Spanish churches we will also be exploring the grand landscape of the Rio Grande River and the Taos Gorge.

We will start our workshop on the afternoon of May 7th at the famous Saint Francis de Asis church near Taos to capture its magnificent form and structure as last light of the day illuminates the church. The next morning on the 8th, we will take the Taos to Santa Fe ‘High Road’ where we will make stops at Mission San Jose de Cracia  in the village of Las Trampas, and also El Santuario de Chimayo church in the village of Chimayo. In Chimayo, we will also break for lunch and then spend some time photographing in and around the village.

After Chimayo we will make our way back towards Taos winding along the Rio Grande. Our sunset destination is the west rim of the Rio Grande Gorge where we will photograph the grand landscape before us which includes the Rio Grande and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

This workshop is open to both beginner and intermediate photographers and is limited to 6 participants. Please contact me at the email or phone number to your right, to reserve your spot.

Topics covered include:

  • composition
  • how to properly expose a scene
  • depth-of-field

Required equipment:

  • a digital SLR camera or advanced point & shoot
  • tripod – not necessary for the daytime shoot, but required for sunset
  • a selection of lenses from wide-angel up to short telephoto – i.e. 28mm to 80mm, but we can easily use lenses up to 200mm
  • it’s also a good idea to bring a circular polarizer filter and graduated neutral density filters if you have them

Lodging and meals are not included. For participants traveling to Taos  for the workshop, I recommend staying at Adobe & Pines Inn located in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. 800-723-8267.

* Our physical activity level will be kept to a minimum. Most activities will involve walking short distances (less than 100 yards) over fairly even terrain. Please remember that northern New Mexico is a ‘high desert’ environment with elevations between 6,000 and 8,000 feet above sea-level. It is very important to stay hydrated and to protect yourself from the sun.
